About the Artist

Background   &   Inspiration

I found my passion for pottery more than 25 years ago as a student at The College of William and Mary.

After graduating from college, I apprenticed to potter Holly Rosenfeld at the
Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA.  Working with Holly taught me not only the technical aspects of pottery, but also what it meant to own and run a pottery studio.

For the next 20 years I worked and studied with many talented artists at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center (Atlanta, GA), Brookhaven College (Dallas, TX), Hyde Park Art Studio (Tampa, FL), and Sertoma Arts Center (Raleigh, NC).  Seminars with respected potters include Rick Bearman, Ron Meyers, Jeff Oestereich and Scott Aubrey.

Travel is another passion of mine and I've had the good fortune to travel extensively in Europe and the Americas.  I try to incorporate my love of world culture and have my work reflect the unifying role that pottery plays in the lives of people everywhere.
About my Work

My work is primarily wheel thrown and functional. I focus on creating forms that are aesthetically unified, beautiful and functionally sound.

  • New designs are tested to make sure they perform well - from pouring effectively or drinking comfortably to surviving the microwave and dishwasher.
  • My pots are primarily porcelain or stoneware, driven by either function and design.
  • Glazing is intended to enhance the overall form.
  • Working on hand-built slab or thrown and altered pieces from time to time allows me to focus on texture and proportions and return to the wheel with fresh perspectives.
  • Creation of my pots is entirely my work - no apprentices are used at any point in the process.
